Basic Plumbing Maintenance
Is your plumbing giving you a headache? You can learn how to do it yourself. If you just said “It’s go time,” then this article is for you. The tips in this article are full of advice on how you can do your own plumbing efficiently.
If you have pipes that make hammering and squeaking noises, you have one easy repair. You will need to anchor any exposed pipes. Get a professional to anchor any hidden pipes if you do not wish to do some work in your floors or walls by yourself.
Pump your septic tank about once every five years, to make sure it is working well. Deposits and debris build up in your tank can result in major problems. There is a cost to having a company pump out your septic tank. But, a serious backup can cost a lot more if it mean replacing the tank.
If you are unable to relieve a clogged toilet with a plunger, try pouring a small bucket of water into the bowl from about waist level if the level of water in the bowl is low. Once the water is lower, do this again. If this fails to remedy the problem, you may want to consider investing in a plumbing snake which spirals down and cleans obstructions.
You should make sure that the holes are not stopped up on any of the sink overflows. The overflow holes are there to make sure the sink doesn’t overfill, which can become a problem if they are blocked. Periodically clear out the overflow holes when doing your other checks for things that may need to be repaired.
Always have cold water running when you are using your garbage disposal. When cold water hits the garbage disposal, it sharpens the blades. This keeps the disposal working properly. When you use hot water, any grease that is in the garbage will melt and be more prone to stopping up your drain.
Do not use your toilet to get rid of garbage. A lot of commonly-flushed items such as tissues, cotton balls and swabs, paper towels, diapers, and sanitary napkins can clog up a toilet by failing to dissolve properly. Use the least amount of toilet paper that you can; use just as much as necessary to properly clean yourself.
